Higher Gauging and Non-invertible Condensation Defects

چکیده

We discuss invertible and non-invertible topological condensation defects arising from gauging a discrete higher-form symmetry on higher codimensional manifold in spacetime, which we define as gauging. A $q$-form is called $p$-gaugeable if it can be gauged codimension-$p$ spacetime. focus 1-gaugeable 1-form symmetries general 2+1d QFT, gauge them surface The universal fusion rules of the resulting surfaces are determined. In special case TQFT, every (invertible non-invertible) 0-form global symmetry, including $\mathbb{Z}_2$ electromagnetic theory, realized further compute between surfaces, bulk lines, lines that only live determining some most basic data for underlying 2-category. emphasize "coefficients" these generally not numbers, but rather 1+1d TQFTs. Finally, examples non-topological QFTs such free $U(1)$ Maxwell theory QED.

Invertible defects and isomorphisms of rational CFTs

Given two two-dimensional conformal field theories, a domain wall – or defect line – between them is called invertible if there is another defect with which it fuses to the identity defect. A defect is called topological if it is transparent to the stress tensor. A conformal isomorphism between the two CFTs is a linear isomorphism between their state spaces which preserves the stress tensor and...

Gauging non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

We address the problem of coupling non-Hermitian systems, treated as fundamental rather than effective theories, to the electromagnetic field. In such theories the observables are not the x and p appearing in the Hamiltonian, but quantities X and P constructed by means of the metric operator. Following the analogous procedure of gauging a global symmetry in Hermitian quantum mechanics we find t...

Invertible calculation's non-invertibility

In cryptosystem theory, it is well-known that a logical mapping that returns the same value that was used as its argument can be inverted with a zero failure probability in linear time. In this paper, however, I show that such a mapping, while trivially assigning a logical state to itself, comes up against an impassable entropy wall such that its computational path is undone inside the threshol...

Gauging a Non-semi-simple Wzw Model

We consider gauged WZWmodels based on a four dimensional non-semi-simple group. We obtain conformal σ-models in D = 3 spacetime dimensions (with exact central charge c = 3) by axially and vectorially gauging a one-dimensional subgroup. The model obtained in the axial gauging is related to the 3D black string after a correlated limit is taken in the latter model. By identifying the CFT correspon...

The Creation of Defects with Core Condensation

Defects in superfluid He, high-Tc superconductors, QCD colour superfluids and cosmic vortons can possess (anti)ferromagnetic cores, and their generalisations. In each case there is a second order parameter whose value is zero in the bulk which does not vanish in the core. We examine the production of defects in the simplest 1+1 dimensional scalar theory in which a second order parameter can tak...
